In Hugo, a financial account always belongs to an institution. Create the institution first, then add one or more products inside it.

Create an institution

  1. Open Financial assets.
  2. Select New institution.
  3. If you use Entities, choose the owner.
  4. Enter the institution name and an optional note.
  5. Select Create.

An institution can be a bank, broker, pension provider, crypto platform, or any other provider that holds financial assets.

Add an account or product

Open the institution and select Add product. Complete:

  • Name—for example, “EUR savings account.”
  • Product type—applies suggested defaults.
  • Currency—the account’s native currency.
  • Opening date—optional.
  • Asset class—Cash & savings, Stocks & ETF, Crypto, Real estate, Other tangible assets, Equity, Pension, or Private credit.
  • Liquidity—Liquid or Illiquid.
  • Track deposits/withdrawals—normally enabled for investment accounts.

Selecting a product type automatically fills its default asset class, liquidity, and flow-tracking choice. Review these values before saving.

After creating the product, open it and select New entry to record its first balance.
